First European Gold Standard certified project ‘CO2 emission reduction from PET recycling’: annual savings of more than 45 380 t of CO2 The ‘Greentech emission reduction from PET recycling, Romania’ project, developed by Greentech (a Green Group member company), is the first project in Europe to implement PET waste frameworks through PET waste recycling, proactively reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would otherwise be required for the production of plastic products made from virgin inputs and accelerating progress towards many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Total GHG emission reductions for the 10-year crediting period (2016-2025) are estimated at 453 800 t CO2. The estimated average annual GHG emission reduction is 45 380 t CO2/year. Furthermore, the project is in line with specific UN requirements because it contributes to local environmental sustainability, as recycling instead of using virgin input material reduces overall energy use, GHGs and the environmental burden caused by natural pollution. resource extraction. At the same time, recycling PET waste reduces the amount of waste disposed of in landfill. The project also contributes to improved working conditions and income distribution to enhance local and regional economic development, increases employment opportunities in the area, contributes to the development of new technologies, regional integration and connection to other sectors and, to a large extent, to local municipalities' funds for social insurance, such as health and pension funds, and to local community and social development.
